Because I teach students with severe disabilities, the staff from my class sits with the students who aren't integrated with typical peers while they eat their lunch. This enables me to see a lot of things in the cafeteria that the other teachers don't see....our contracts state that we get a "duty-free" lunch so all of the other teachers must eat while their class eats (we rotate our lunches since there are 4 staff in my class). This is in stark contrast to the pleasant community dining experience that I have seen in examples from the Italian Reggio Emilia model and even the family dining style I used when I taught in an early childhood setting, where we ate with the students (imagine!). I do think it's unfortunate. I watched a very overweight boy pull out no less than 5 packs of fruit snacks from the lunch box he had packed to go along with his bought school lunch.
